LA GUITARRA

Por Los Auténticos Decadentes

Tuve un problema de dificil solución en una
época difícil de mi vida.
Estaba entre la espada y la pared,
y aguantando la opinión de mi familia.

Yo no quería una vida normal,
no me gustaban los horarios de oficina.
Mi espíritu rebelde se reía
del dinero, del lujo y el confort.

Y tuve una revelación,
ya se que quiero en esta vida.
Voy a seguir mi vocación
será la música mi techo y mi comida.

Porque yo
no quiero trabajar,
no quiero ir a estudiar,
no me quiero casar.
Quiero tocar la guitarra todo el día,
y que la gente se enamore de mi voz.

Porque yo
no quiero trabajar,
no quiero ir a estudiar,
no me quiero casar.
Y en la cabeza tenia
la voz de mi viejo,
que me sonaba como
un rulo de tambor.

Vos
mejor que te afeites,
mejor que madures, mejor que labures.
Ya me cansé de que me tomes la cerveza,
te voy a dar con la guitarra en la cabeza.

Vos
mejor que te afeites,
mejor que madures, mejor que labures.
Ya me cansé de ser tu fuente de dinero,
voy a ponerte esa guitarra de sombrero.

Y tuve una revelación,
ya se que quiero en esta vida.
Voy a seguir mi vocación
será la música mi techo y mi comida.

Porque yo
no quiero trabajar,
no quiero ir a estudiar,
no me quiero casar.
Quiero tocar la guitarra todo el día,
y que la gente se enamore de mi voz.

Porque yo
no quiero trabajar,
no quiero ir a estudiar,
no me quiero casar.
Y en la cabeza tenia
la voz de mi viejo,
que me sonaba como
un rulo de tambor.

Vos
mejor que te afeites,
mejor que madures, mejor que labures.
Ya me cansé de que me tomes la cerveza,
te voy a dar con la guitarra en la cabeza.

Vos
mejor que te afeites,
mejor que madures, mejor que labures.
Ya me cansé de ser tu fuente de dinero,
voy a ponerte esa guitarra de sombrero.

GRAMÁTICA

Note: this song is an excellent opportunity to learn how the two most important forms of the past work in Spanish:

The imperfect and the Preterite.

You may probably have noticed that verbs in both of these tenses appear in blue and red throughout the lyrics.

They correspond to the Simple Past Tense of the English language. However, in Spanish there are two forms:

Example:

tener --- to have

I had  some problems.

Tenía algunos problemas... or... Tuve algunos problemas.

reirse --- to laugh

I laughed a lot.

Me reía mucho ... or ... Me reí mucho.

EJERCICIO #5

Understanding how to form these two tenses.

Go to our online conjugator at  the following link:

http://www.esaudio.net/conjugator

Look up and write down The Imperfect and the Preterite forms of the following verbs:

seguir - trabajar - comer -

For example:

Verbo: SEGUIR

Imperfecto

Pretérito

yo       seguía
       seguías
él       seguía
nosotros seguíamos
vosotros seguíais
ellos    seguían

yo       seguí
       seguiste
él       siguió
nosotros seguimos
vosotros seguisteis
ellos    siguieron

Afterwards, compare the endings, analyze them and create a rule explaining how verbs are conjugated in the Imperfect and in the Preterite tenses.

EJERCICIO #6

After analysing the conjugations, complete  the following rules:

The Imperfect Tense

We form the imperfect tense by dropping the -ar, -er, or -ir of the infinitive form.

For verbs ending in -ar, we add...

to the root fo the verb.

For verbs ending in -er or -ir, we add...

to the root fo the verb.

The Preterite

We form the preterite tense by dropping the -ar, -er, or -ir of the infinitive form.

For verbs ending in -ar, we add...

to the root fo the verb.

For verbs ending in -er or -ir, we add...

to the root fo the verb.

EJERCICIO #7

Uso Gramatical

If you have studied these tenses before, you were probably overwhelmed with rules and more rules on how and  when to use the Imperfect and  the Preterite.

Did you know that all of those rules boil down to two simple concepts? Let's find out!

We use the Preterite Tense when we are referring to specific moments in the past:

Ejemplo:

Ayer compré unas golosinas.

Yesterday, I bought some snacks.

Viajé a España en 1989.

I traveled to Spain in 1989.

As you can see ayer ,in the first example, and 1989, in the second, indicate that we are refering to a particular and specific moment in the past.

Now have a look at these examples:

Ejemplos:

Cuando era niño, compraba golosinas todos los días.

When I was a child, I bought / I used to buy snacks every day.

Unos años atrás, viajaba a España con mucha frecuencia.

Some years ago, I traveled to Spain very often.

In these two examples we are talking about events in the past. However, these events are not refering to a specific time but rather to a general period of time, i.e, when I was a child, some few years ago.

In other words, we use the Imperfect Tense when we talk about general situations that took place in the past.

EJERCICIO #8

Look at the following sentences taken from the lyrics. Identify the tenses and explain why these tenses are used:

Ejemplo:

0) Tuve un problema de dificil solución en una
época difícil de mi vida.

Tense: Pretérito

Reason: The author is talking about a problem he had at a specific time (at a difficult time in his life)

1) Estaba entre la espada y la pared.

2) No quería una vida normal.

3) No me gustaban los horarios de oficina.

4) Mi espíritu rebelde se reía.

5) Tuve una revelación.

6) Ya me cansé de que me tomes la cerveza.

Note:

There are many more structures that could be taught from these lyrics. Of course, we have focused on the differences between the Imperfect and the Preterite as it is impossible to cover every single one of them in just one lesson.

Some suggested structures to deal with:

The Future: Voy a + infinitive, será.

Quiero + infinitive VS Quiero que + Subjunctive

Cultural Differences: El VOSEO
