EJERCICIO #2

entero entregarte
Un segundo más de vida para darte

y a tu lado para siempre yo quedarme
Un segundo más de vida yo

a Dios le pido

que si me muero sea de amor
y si me enamoro sea de vos
y que de tu voz sea este corazón
todos los dias a Dios le pido

que si me muero sea de amor
y si me enamoro sea de vos
y que de tu voz sea este corazón
todos los dias a Dios le pido
A Dios le pido.

GRAMÁTICA

Note: this song is an excellent opportunity to learn how the subjunctive works in Spanish:

You may probably have noticed that we highlighted some verb phrases in blue throughout the lyrics.

These are typical occurrences of the Spanish Present Subjunctive form

Examples:

recordar --- to remember

I ask God that my father remembers me.

A Dios le pido QUE mi padre me recuerde.

quedarse --- to stay

I ask God that you stay by my side / stay with me.

A Dios le pido QUE te quedes a mi lado.

EJERCICIO #5

Understanding how to form these two tenses.

Go to our online conjugator at  the following link:

http://www.esaudio.net/conjugator

Look up and write down Present Subjunctive forms of the following verbs:

quedarse - morir - comer -

For example:

Verbo: QUEDARSE

Verbo: MORIR

Present Subjunctive

Present Subjunctive

yo       me quede
       te quedes
él       se quede
nos.     nos quedemos
vosotros os quedéis
ellos    se queden

yo

él
nosotros
vosotros
ellos

Afterwards, compare the endings, analyze them and create a rule explaining how verbs are conjugated in Present Subjunctive.

EJERCICIO #6

After analysing the conjugations, complete  the following rules:

The Present Subjunctive

We form the Present Subjunctive tense by dropping the -ar, -er, or -ir of the infinitive form.

For verbs ending in -ar, we add...

to the root fo the verb.

For verbs ending in -er or -ir, we add...

to the root fo the verb.

EJERCICIO #7

Uso Gramatical

If you have studied the subjunctive before, you were probably overwhelmed with rules and more rules on how and  when to use it.

Did you know that all of those rules boil down to two simple concepts? Let's find out!

Ejemplo:

A Dios le pido que mi madre no se muera.

A Dios le pido que mi padre me recuerde.

We use the Subjunctive when there is a possibility that the action about which you are speaking has not or may not take
place (this plus the word QUE usually trigger the subjunctive)

As you can in these examples we are not 100% certain that our wishes will be granted. We do not know for certain that this will occur. Consequently, we use the subjunctive form.

EJERCICIO #8

Look at the following sentences taken from the lyrics. Without looking at the original lyrics, conjugate the verbs in the subjunctive form.

Que mis ojos se con la luz de tu mirada yo
a Dios le pido

Que mi madre no se y que mi padre me
a Dios le pido

Que te a mi lado y que nunca te me mi vida, a Dios le pido

Que mi alma no cuando de amarte se mi cielo , a Dios le pido

Que mi pueblo no tanta sangre y se mi gente, a Dios le pido...

Note:

There are many more structures that could be taught from these lyrics. Of course, we have focused on one of the uses of the subjunctive as it is impossible to cover every single one of them in just one lesson.

Some suggested structures to deal with:
