Let’s have a look at the main uses of POR and PARA. The video below will show you an even simpler way to tell them apart:
PARA:
* Purpose (in order to): Voy a ir al supermercado para comprar comida.
* Deadline (by a certain day/date): Necesitamos terminar este informe para el lunes.
* Destination (to/towards a place): Viajaremos para Buenos Aires in dos días.
* Recipient (for you, for him): Este dinero es para tu hermana.
POR:
* (Because of, due to): Susana no trabaja aquí por el dinero. (She doesn’t work here for the money)
* (By, via, by means of):Viajamos a Buenos Aires por avión. (We traveled to Buenos Aires by plane)
* (Through, along): Después de graduarme, voy a viajar por Europa. ( After graduating, I will travel through Europe)
* (During, in (time of day). Me gusta mirar televisión por la noche. (I like to watch TV in the evening)
* (For: in exchange for): Recibimos $250 por nuestra vieja computadora. (We got $250 for our old computer)
* (For: for a period of time): Trabajamos en el jardín por más de 4 horas. (We worked in the garden for more than 4 hours)
* (For: for the sake of, on behalf of): Lo hizo solo por ella (I only did it for her).
